Pharmacy Computer Services, Inc. (PCSI) has developed another cutting-edge solution, this time to help pharmacies convert data from legacy pharmacy systems. The latest in the Mazama product line allows pharmacies to convert pharmacy data from legacy systems to with ease and store it in a secure environment locally, or in the cloud.

This system allows pharmacies to retain all data from clinical, electronic medical record (EMR) systems, billing, ambulatory, hospital, and inpatient records. Data is then accessible through a simple and easy-to-navigate user interface (see a demo here). Data conversion for pharmacies can be a difficult process. PCSI offers data conversion for pharmacy coupled with a four decade long history in pharmacy software development. PCSI’s highly trained and knowledgable staff work side-by-side with the pharmacy and vendors to convert the data to the archive system.

PCSI, GID to Offer Joint Solution to US Pharmacy Market

Global Information Distribution (GID) and Pharmacy Computer Services, Inc. (PCSI) have joined teams to create one of the most powerful data archival solutions on the market today for US pharmacies. The joint solution directly addresses pharmacy leaders’ concerns over data security and costly audits.

“Bringing these two products together was a natural and, quite frankly, an obvious decision. As the focus on data security in the pharmacy gains more attention, we felt the need to step up and address this pain point in a big way”, said Brian Borst, President and COO of Pharmacy Computer Services, Inc.

PCSI’s Mazama Archive and GID’s Silent Cube bring best-in-class software and hardware services together to protect pharmacies from data breeches, audits and other operational disruptions. Both systems currently operate in large health systems across the United States and with additional installations spanning the globe.

With pharmacy audits reaching new highs in both frequency and cost, PCSI and GID expect demand to increase significantly in the next calendar year.

“We are excited to offer these two products as a soup to nuts solution for pharmacy data archiving. The traditional focus has been on secure data entry. We believe the market is evolving its focus on long-term data storage, giving pharmacies and IT teams the ability to be fully agnostic”, adds Jim Pierce, VP of North American Operations for GID, Inc.

The joint solution will be available for demonstrations and pre-orders on September 24th.  Organizations can request a product demonstration here.

Pharmacy Inventory Management: The Value of Automation and Importance of Balancing Cost and Demand

12/10/2014

Effective inventory management is crucial to the success of any business affected by the supply chain. In the pharmacy industry, inventory management becomes even more critical as a late order or shipment can result in the delay of medical procedures or, even worse, medication errors. The way a pharmacy manages its inventory directly affects its liability and, consequently, the long-term sustainability of its business.

“Adverse patient outcomes related to drug product shortages have prompted aggressive management strategies by healthcare providers and gained the attention of the Joint Commission, the government and the media. Drug product shortages adversely affect health-system finances by increasing the cost of delivering patient care, largely through higher drug acquisition and personal costs. In addition, shortages create a high level of frustration for everyone involved, including purchasing agents, pharmacists, nurses, physicians and patients.”[1]

Balancing the twin demons of cost and demand can be a daunting task for any pharmacy as they work to accommodate hundreds to thousands of prescription orders a day in a seamless, safe and responsive fashion. In a KLAS study titled Growing Pharmacy Inventory Management Complexities Increase Hospital Need for Comprehensive, Integrated Solutions Coray Tate, the project’s author states that “Using automation software was significantly better than manual tracking, and some reported dramatic financial savings after moving from a manual process.” He later adds, “Hospitals need to improve their medication inventory management processes to help reduce costs. Automation needs to be a big part of the answer, and vendors need to deliver improved solutions to a larger potion of their customer base. Automation may not be able to solve all problems, but it can be a big part of the solution…” [2]

Earlier this year PCSI released a new stand-alone inventory solution to beta. This system is hosted in the cloud and designed to give pharmacies the freedom and flexibility needed to manage inventory, maximize profits and spend more time with patients. Compatible with leading browsers, tablets and smart phones this system allows users to:
  • Manage an unlimited number of catalogues for specialty, formulary or value priced drugs.
  • View historical transactions for drugs in a specific catalogue.
  • Search across the entire system with a simple and easy to search function.
  • Transfer items between catalogues with one click.
  • Establish reorder points and automatically generate purchase orders.
  • Share inventory across multiple pharmacies.
  • View time stamps and see what users did and when.
